Dye the dogs hair?

I've been trying to figure out if there is a safe way to dye McKay's hair. I don't want to burn his coat or skin. I found some animal safe dye they use on poodles but I don't know if it will work on McKay's dark hair. I think it would have to be bleached which could be dangerous. And how do I keep him from licking the hair while the dye is on it?

My sister and I bleached one of our black cat's tail when we were putting highlights in our hair. We wrapped his tail in Saran wrap so he couldn't lick it. It lasted several months didn't seem to hurt him, but the hair turned an orange color instead of blond. he looked like a punk cat.
